Johnny Burrel Wright, 78, of Tatum, Texas, ended his journey on this earth in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family
Johnny was born August 23, 1947, in Center, Texas, to Johnnie B McKinley and Burl Lloyd Wright, the youngest of three boys Johnny spent his early childhood in Chinquapin, Texas, before moving to Vidor, Texas, where he met the love of his life Billie Lee Rogers.
Johnny Joined the U.S. Navy and on December 21, 1966, the day before being shipped out to Long Beach, California, Johnny and Billie married in Johnny’s parents’ living room where Johnny wore his uniform and Billie wore a dress she had bought to wear to a dance with another boy
Johnny worked as a pipe fitter for many years, but much of his career was focused on his calling of being a minister of the gospel Johnny evangelized and pastored for over 50 years. His calling was not limited to the four walls of a church, but branched out to people in the grocery store, bank tellers, and even people trying to throw out their trash at the county dump Johnny love to share Jesus and love to share God’s word right alongside his bride as song leader.
Johnny and Billie shared 59 affectionate years of marriage together and had four children, 16 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Johnny never let an opportunity pass to shower his wife with praise, love, and affection.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie B and Burl; and his two older brothers, Nelson and Lameach Wright.
Johnny is survived by his wife Billie and his four loving children, Perry and his wife Beth of Silsbee, Jody and his wife Jessica of McKinney, Christi and her husband Jason of Henderson, and Liz and her husband Kevin of Henderson; and their grandchildren, Kimberly, Krista, Jacob, Vaughan, Truitt and Oakley, John, Xavier, Zachariah and Nathaniel, Indiana and Gabriella, Ethan, Rylan, Harrison and Makinlee; and their great-grandchildren, Bailey, Emma, Tristan, Weston, Raylee and Kira Jo, Brettlee and Riggin, Jameson, Lottie, and Myles.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Chalk Hill Assembly of God Church, located at 14144 County Road 2164, Henderson, TX 75652.
Private graveside services are being held at Chinquapin Cemetery in San Augustine County, Texas.
